Job Description Final

Realtor Assistant

Having a friend that is in real estate comes with its perks. One of those perks is getting the job as her assistant! You get to meet new people, and through interactions, you can network. I also thought it would be an excellent opportunity to learn the ins and outs of real estate. I would get to do all this while being able to spend some time with my friend.

Introducing RE/MAX Marketplace, a New Home for the Approved Suppliers Program | RE/MAX NEWS

A realtor assistant provides support for real estate agents with administrative work such as responding to emails phone calls, scheduling meetings, delivering paperwork to clients. Well, that's sort of how my friend described it. I soon realized, however, that my job was to do whatever they asked of me. For the most part, I had fun, but it wasn't always smooth sailing.

My tasks explained in three phrases would consist of:

  • Delivery Boy
  • Open House Sign Setup Boy
  • Communication Boy

I will go into more detail in regards to these descriptions.

Delivery Boy

As a delivery boy, I used the company van that had my friend's face plastered all over it. I would deliver boxes filled with pamphlets to the post office and, upon arrival, would unload the packages to be sent off. The brochures were mailed out to people within the area to let them know of homes placed on the market. I would also deliver keys to clients that have recently bought a new home. I met some incredible people, such as former Rams QB Jared Goff. The fun part was going to get food or coffee for the office. They would give the company card to buy the goods, and if I wanted an Oreo Mcflury, I could get one. I was everyone's favorite in the office because most of the time, I would have food for them if they saw me. What is there not to like? I got to drive around the town listening to music and getting food.

Open House Sign Setup Boy

During the week, most of my work consisted of deliveries and office work, which I will talk more about later. On the weekends (Oh yes, I did indeed work weekends!), we would have, on average, around 3-4 open houses. Open houses are when people come and see a home they may be interested in. I was in charge of setting up signs that would point towards the direction of the open house. I would distribute around 7-8 signs per house, but it would vary. My friend's office focused its market in Palos Verdes area. This area has many hills and windy roads, and about half of the homes are in secluded spots. I would put more signs up for the homes in hidden places to help people find the location. Each open house was usually from noon until 4 pm, and I was given around 2 hours to put up all the signs. Most of the time, I was cutting it close. I would drive around the park, turn on my hazard lights, jump out quickly, and put up the sign. If it were a windy day, I would sometimes struggle with putting up a sign for about 5 minutes. I had to improvise most of the time and use a nearby brick or rock to weigh down a sign. I've had to chase a couple down some streets when I did not secure them well. I was not too fond of this part of the job, and I always ended up sweaty and exhausted. I know it sounds simple, but it wasn't.

Communication Boy

I was at a desk answering phone calls about half of the time, taking messages when my friend was busy with another client. I was also in charge of responding to emails; most of these consisted of people interested in a particular house and wanted more information. I would set up an appointment with a realtor (most of the time, my friend) so that they can begin the process of searching for the ideal home. Some days were jam-packed, and I would be on the phone while responding to emails. Then some days were less busy, and I would watch Netflix with one of the other assistants in the office. My boss said this was okay, of course, and in fact, he would watch Narcos with me!

Conclusion

I want you to take my experience with a grain of salt. My friend's Dad has established himself as one of the best realtors in the South Bay of Los Angeles. I was qualified for the position but also fortunate to get this job. Since I was working with my friend, it was pretty laid back, but when it gets busy, it gets busy. The pay is good, especially on weekends. You learn to communicate with different people and manage time and organize. If you are into real estate or want to learn more about it, I would definitely recommend this job.

  1. Hi Angel,

Your job sounds so cool! I am not a huge driver myself, but being a delivery person sounds like so much fun the way you described it! I would love to get paid to listen to music, drive around, and eat Oreo Mcflurries, especially the last part. The sign setup part sounds hard though, and a lot of work. Kudos to you for keeping up with the signs blowing away in the wind haha.

  2. Hey Angel, that's cool that you got to meet Jared Goff. Your job sounds like it was pretty fun but also insightful to see what it takes to be successful in that industry like your boss. I wouldn't mind working weekends too much either if I got to drive around and get McFlurries as part of my job. Do you think you wanna get into real estate in the future or is it more of a gig for the time being? I've somewhat thought about getting into real estate eventually but I'm not sure yet.

  3. Hi Angel,

I really enjoyed reading your job description. If you read mine you would know that it had to do with real estate as well. Another cool thing is that my brother is a real estate agent and I too sometimes have to be his assistant. There have been many times where he hasn't been able to deliver keys or times where he is too busy and needs help setting up sign outside of the house. And like you said, although it sounds simple, it can get tedious and difficult. Thank you for sharing!

  4. Hi Angel,

I would have loved being a delivery boy. Free food? Say less. Although, I would have probably ordered an Oreo Blast from Sonic. I'm glad you had a great experience (excluding the signs that would fly away). I'm not that interested in real estate, but the work culture at the job seem like something I would enjoy.

Did the company card have a limit? Could you have gotten an Oreo Mcflury and meal?

  5. Hi Angel,

I really enjoyed reading your job description! I thought when you added "boy" to the end of every description it made your blog funnier and more lighthearted. Getting Mcflurries sounds like so much fun even if it is on weekends. Thank you for sharing!
