Putting The Rabbit in the Hat Post One
This new year I made a resolution that I was going to try to read at least two books a month. Looking back maybe I was being too optimistic, but this assignment helps somewhat keeping me on pace. Looking at the list of books, All the Young Men, caught my eye because it’s about Brian Cox. I love the show Succession, and Brian Cox is brilliant in it. All I knew about him was that he was a well-established Scottish actor in the industry, that dabbled in Shakespeare early in his career. I am a theater minor and love everything about the world of acting. I find it interesting to learn about the upbringings of different actors, how each of his or her life experiences helped shaped their careers.
After being about halfway through the book, I can say without a doubt I picked the right book. Brian Cox had a rough childhood and faced many hardships early in his life. He lost his father at an early age, who was remembered as a local shop owner that gave back to his community. Brian Cox for the most part always knew he wanted to be an actor since his childhood, there were many signs along the way. There was a moment in his childhood, where he was getting egged on to bully another kid, and instead he put on an act. He swung at the air, flailing his arms all around, missing with style. The other kids laughed at the absurdity, and Brian loved every moment of it. Brian and his mom loved the world of cinema, so much so that he would watch the same film back-to-back at times. When I read the book, I read with a Scottish accent in my mind not intentionally. He is very straight forward and articulate, but in a nonchalant manner. He keeps me engaged with his storytelling abilities. His book is written in a manner as though your great uncle is telling stories of his childhood and life experiences. He is descriptive and is able to paint a picture in the readers minds. I am enjoying every moment thus far and am exciting to continue to learn of how his early hardships and life experiences contributed to his acting career.
