Losing Eden Post 2
Book 2 Post 2
Over the last couple of days, I have finally been able to finish reading Losing Eden, written by Lucy Jones. I can say truthfully that I it was a pleasure to read. I had read reviews online about the book, so I had a general idea of what the book was going to be like. It is exactly how I had described it in one of my earlier posts. This book feels like a combination of poetry, philosophy with informational segments, all mixed in with a memoir.
Lucy Jones early on touches on how she struggled with drugs and alcohol. She reminds us of how the suicide rate has increased by over 25 percent since 1999. She relied on drugs to make her feel comfortable in her own skin. It was only after about a year later she focused on the world around her, more specifically her relationship with nature. One part that I found interesting was how she refers to a microbiologist that mentions how babies “left to their own devices will eat soil”. The belief is that it is in our nature to do so, in order to digest microbes that are essential to our immune system. Lucy points out how we have gone away from our roots and people now spend less time out in nature. This can have negative affects to a human’s health physically, mentally, and even spiritually. There was another case study that pointed out how Amish people had lower levels of chronic inflammation, and how this correlates with them spending more time with nature.
While the book was educational with new information, it also reminded me of the importance of how nature can play a positive role with improving your mental health. The pandemic was hard on many of us in many different ways. The pandemic made me feel isolated and I found peace in nature. During that time, I would go on hikes, walks around the beach, and focused on being in the moment. I would recommend this book to anyone that is curious about how humans and nature are intertwined. Losing Eden is unlike anything that I have ever read before, but I am glad I gave this book a chance.
