World We Dare to Imagine Part 3

World We Dare to Imagine                                                      The world is an interesting place; it’s a beautiful and complicated world that we live in. I like to hope that for the most part we all are striving to make the world a better place. There are so many organizations out there that have great intentions with a goal in mind to make a difference. Unfortunately, good intentions don’t always translate to good results. You see in my experience with nonprofit work in the pa...

World We Dare to Imagine Post 1

EXCERPT from  The Blue Sweater  by Jacqueline Novogratz Today we are redefining the geography of community and accepting shared accountability for common human values. We have the chance to extend the notion that all men are created equal to every human being on the planet. This will require global structures and products we are only beginning to imagine.... Each of us in his or her own way can contribute something by thinking -- and acting -- like a true global citizen. We have only one world for all of us on earth, and the future really is ours to create, in a world we dare to imagine together.   The world is so large and diverse, and each person has their own set of unique problems. Every day is an opportunity to help make the world a better place for all of us. I think taking baby steps is the best way to approach the problems of the world. The first step I would take is to focus on helping everyone try to understand each other a lot bett...

The Final Days at USC     Time flies by when you’re having fun! These last couple of years at the University of Southern California, have been a dream come true for me.   USC was my dream school ever since I can remember, and I told myself that one day I was going to be a Trojan. I still remember the day that I found out that I had been accepted into USC, and now graduation is only about a month away. For my last random post, I want to reflect on my time at USC and talk about what I have learned and touch upon some of my highlights.   In May, I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a minor in theater. Looking back, I am happy with the path I selected. I was able to experience two completely different fields. One benefit is that I was also able to take different concepts that I learned from each and I was able to apply them to one another. Early on I realized that for Business classes I was going to have to do a lot o...

Losing Eden Post 2

Book 2 Post 2     Over the last couple of days, I have finally been able to finish reading Losing Eden, written by Lucy Jones. I can say truthfully that I it was a pleasure to read. I had read reviews online about the book, so I had a general idea of what the book was going to be like. It is exactly how I had described it in one of my earlier posts. This book feels like a combination of poetry, philosophy with informational segments, all mixed in with a memoir.   Lucy Jones early on touches on how she struggled with drugs and alcohol. She reminds us of how the suicide rate has increased by over 25 percent since 1999. She relied on drugs to make her feel comfortable in her own skin. It was only after about a year later she focused on the world around her, more specifically her relationship with nature. One part that I found interesting was how she refers to a microbiologist that mentions how babies “left to their own devices will eat soil”. The belief is ...

Losing Eden Post 1

Book 2 Post 1      Looking at the list of books we can read, the one that caught my eye was Losing Eden, by Lucy Jones. The book is currently on a journey making its way to my lovely home. I am excited to start reading this book, because based off the description it’s about the importance of nature and its connection with humans. From what I have gathered, Jones mentions how nature is so intertwined with us, that its almost essential that we have this communion with it. She talks about her feelings and how they are improved by her environment. She goes a step further and will refer to some studies that may indicate her natural intuitions are correct. Based on the reviews the book seems to be informative but also poetic at the same time.     Unfortunately, now at day’s most people I think spend their time indoors watching TV instead of being outside. I think that many of us sometimes take nature for granted. When we were in the lock-dow...

Random Post #1 Powerlifitng   Growing up I was always in to playing sports. I played almost every sport from football, soccer, baseball, basketball, boxing, and even gave hockey a try (it only lasted about week). I would say I was decent in every sport that I played. I never was this athletic freak, and I wasn’t the biggest, but I would say I had speed. As I got older though I no longer had speed as an advantage, because the competition I started facing had size, power, and speed. After high school I didn’t play in organized sports and instead turned to going to the gym. I mainly went just to be fit and look good, but my sophomore year at USC that all changed. I discovered the sport of powerlifting and joined the Trojan Barbell Club.         What is Powerlifting?   It is a sport that focuses on strength, that is tested out with three main lifts: barbell squat, bench press, and deadlift. You get three attempts on each lift,...
